If someone in your pool or hot tub is in trouble, the first thing to do is to get them out of the water. If possible, use a reach pole or a throwing device to help you.(Do not go into a swimming pool yourself unless absolutely necessary. A drowning person can easily pull you under the water, and then both of you would be in trouble.)

IN AN EMERGENCY, YOU NEED A " CALL LIST"

Having an emergency call list is a must for the backyard pool owner. It's an intricate part of making your pool safe. Therefore, it is extremely important that you create and display a list of emergency telephone numbers (and the location of the nearest telephone) somewhere in the immediate vicinity of your pool. You should include the number of the emergency "first responder" in your area (e.g., 9-1-1 or whatever number is applicable). You may also want to list the number of your local police, fire department, the closest emergency hospital or possibly the local poison control center. If you dial this toll-free number (1-800-222-1222)  you can be connected with the poison control center in your area.

If you have children who are old enough to use a telephone, teach them to recognize the emergency numbers. If you have a pet that swims in your pool you may also want to list the phone number of your veterinarian. If you have someone watching the users of the pool (perhaps a babysitter or friend) make sure that they are shown where the emergency numbers are listed and the location of the telephone.
