Most states in the U.S. regulate public swimming pools and hot tubs (i.e., commercial operations, and other similar aquatic facilities serving the general public). However, only a few states have statewide laws affecting private residential swimming pools and hot tubs (i.e., those installed at a private residence for use by the homeowner and the owner's guests).

Most statewide residential pool and hot tub regulations are written within building codes, plumbing codes, or fire safety codes. If you click on a state but do not see an icon, we have not yet found regulations for that state. If you find that your state incorporates Appendix G of the International Residential Code as the requirements for residential swimming pools and hot tubs, you can view that document by clicking here.
